Carbon taxes hurt the economy AND environment
In a new Financial Post article, Michael Binnion explains why carbon taxes are detrimental to both the Canadian economy and the global environment.
Have you seen this great op-ed by Michael Binnion in today's Financial Post?
The article discusses why carbon taxes are detrimental to both the Canadian economy and the global environment. Due to Canada’s trade vulnerabilities and the inelastic demand for energy, carbon taxes shift production and investment to lower-taxed jurisdictions, which can actually increase global emissions.
Canada loses out on jobs and prosperity, with no environmental benefit.
Mr. Binnion writes:
“A global approach to capitalizing on Canada’s environmental advantage would yield a double dividend of a stronger economy and a cleaner global environment. Carbon pricing, on the other hand, may create a green paradox — policies meant to reduce emissions that not only eliminate some people’s jobs, but increase global emissions.”
